Held annually during the ninth lunar month, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is one of Thailand’s most visually striking and spiritually intense religious events. Rooted in Taoist tradition, the festival blends purification rituals with acts of extreme devotion, as participants — known as ma song — undergo piercings, firewalking, and processions in a quest for protection, merit, and spiritual cleansing.
